Our Story

It started on a Sunday morning.

"Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing." 

 John 15:5 NLT. I had read it the morning before. When our pastor used it in his message I knew I needed to go deeper. So I did. I pulled the Greek definitions of every key word in that verse. What I found stopped me completely.

Greek definitions

  • Branch: κλῆμα

    A tender and flexible shoot of a vine. A vine sprout. New, green, and growing directly from the vine.

  • Abide: μένω

    To remain. Not to depart. To continue to be present, to be held, to be kept continually. To remain as one, not to become another or different.

  • Fruit: καρπός

    That which originates or comes from something. An effect, a result. Not something the branch produces. Something the vine produces through the branch.

When a new shoot is cut off from the vine, its life is cut off. It is literally nothing when severed. It only produces while attached and growing from the vine. The branch and the fruit are just things. Effects and results of the one verb that matters: abide. The fruit is born through the vine, not on the branch's own effort. The branch's work is not to produce the fruit.

The branch's work is to remain.

As branches we are not meant to go off on our own, make new sprouts, and become fruit bearing through our own doing. But we try. So often we attempt to take the position of the seed. Planning, performing, striving to produce and make our own way. Or we even try to take the position of the vine itself. Being everything for everyone. Holding it all together.

We are not meant to produce. We are meant to remain.

This is where the brand was born.

Sitting with the weight of what I had just read, I thought about how exhausting it is to people please. To work so hard at being a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister, a leader, a _____.

I thought about many women I know who are tired. Not because they are doing it wrong, but because they have believed the lies of the world. They have quietly taken on a role they were never given. They are trying to be the vine and the fruit all at once. Producing, performing, straining to justify their place and feel 'successful' in these everyday spaces.

I thought, 'but how do I abide when I am pulled into the moments', 'how do I re-wire my thoughts'? I thought about what it would look like if something small could interrupt that. Not a sermon. Not another activity to add to the day. Just the Word worn close. Catching my eye when the pressure builds.

Look down. Breathe. Remember. Remain.

That is why Klema Co. exists. To retire the lies we tell ourselves and re-center in truth.

Every piece we make is a wearable reminder that the fruit will come from the vine. Our work is to remain. To be present with. To be held by. To be kept continually in the vine.
